Subaru Announces September Sales Figures; Best September Total Sales Month in 12 Years
    CHERRY HILL, N.J., Oct. 1 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its September sales figures.  Subaru recorded a sales total of
14,771 units for the month, up 17 percent over the same period last year
(12,671 units).  Year-to-date totals of 115,597 units are up 10 percent over
1998 year-to-date totals of 105,566 units.  This marks the company's best
September sales month as well as the best year-to-date sales since 1987.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 7,873 units posted.  The Outback
recorded its second best sales month with 5,680 units, 24 percent over
September 1998 Outback sales.  Forester posted sales of 4,863 units, an
increase of 31 percent over the same month last year.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd. of Japan.  Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 600 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy
and Outback models sold in the U.S. are produced at the company's American
manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc. near Lafayette, Ind.
