Gas Price Jumps 3.2 Cents to Highest Level in 20 Months, AAA Fuel Gauge Report Shows
ORLANDO, Fla.--July 20, 1999--The national average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline jumped 3.2 cents to $1.174 per gallon - the highest level since late 1997, according to AAA.The AAA Fuel Gauge Report shows this month's price reverses a brief one-month decline in June and is at its highest level since it averaged $1.216 per gallon in December 1997.
Self-serve mid-grade averages $1.261 per gallon and self-serve premium averages $1.318, both up 3 cents in the last month.
The regional average is most expensive in the West, at $1.323 per gallon, a 2.6-cent rise in one month. It is least expensive in the Southeast, at $1.092, up 3.8 cents from a month ago.
Other regional prices for self-serve unleaded are: New England, $1.178, up 3.1 cents in one month; Mid-Atlantic, $1.147, up 3 cents; Great Lakes, $1.162, up 3.5 cents; Midwest, $1.127, up 4.2 cents; and Southwest, $1.138, up 1.9 cents.
The national average prices for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline for the last six months were: June, $1.142 per gallon; May, $1.157; April $1.15; March, 97 cents; February, 96 cents; and January, 97.9 cents.
The national average price for the last five years were: 1998, $1.099 per gallon; 1997, $1.233; 1996, $1.274; 1995, $1.208; and 1994, $1.143.
