'Safe Car Of The Millennium' Award Recognizes Simula Product

24 June 1999

International Brain Injury Association's 'Safe Car Of The Millennium' Award Recognizes Simula's Head & Neck Protection System
PHOENIX, June 24 -- Not all auto airbag systems provide
comparable protection, says the International Brain Injury Association (IBIA).
That's why IBIA recognized the Simula, Inc. Inflatable Tubular
Structure (ITS(R)) as a cutting-edge occupant-protection technology that
provides incomparable head, neck and spine protection during side-impact and
rollover accidents. The Association awarded BMW, the first automaker that has
integrated the ITS head-protection system into its full range of sedan models,
with the first-ever "Safe Car of the Millennium" Award.
In proving the "Safe Car" Award, the IBIA pointed out that Simula's ITS
technology helps reduce risks of serious head or spinal injuries in
three accident scenarios:

    * It helps protect the head from intrusion from outside objects such as
       trees, poles, etc.;
    * It helps prevent the ejection of passengers, especially in rollover
       accidents; and
    * It helps keep the head, neck and spine aligned and reduces head
       rotation.

"We are gratified that the International Brain Injury Association
appreciates the effectiveness of our ITS technology in preventing head
injuries. Simula is committed to being the best safety technology company in
the world," said Donald W. Townsend, President of Simula.
Simula is known worldwide for its diversified technology and engineering
capabilities in designing and manufacturing occupant safety systems and
devices engineered to safeguard human life in a wide range of air, ground, and
sea-transportation vehicles. The Company operates three principal lines of
business that are aligned with its core technologies: government and defense,
commercial transportation seating, and automotive safety systems.
Simula ASD (Automotive Safety Devices) designs and manufactures advanced
occupant restraint systems, including its proprietary technology, the
Inflatable Tubular Structure (ITS(R)), for automobiles and trucks. The
Company has also developed additional applications for its ITS-related
technology, most notably the Inflatable Tubular Torso Restraint (ITTR). The
ITTR is a patented seat belt device that incorporates an inflatable tube into
the torso portion of the belt. The ITTR has generated significant interest in
the automotive market both for its innovative design and its potential to
offer greatly enhanced occupant protection.

The International Brain Injury Association (IBIA) is a nonprofit
organization committed to serving individuals with brain injury and their
families around the world. Although IBIA was founded as the international arm
of the Brain Injury Association (BIA), headquartered in Alexandria, VA, IBIA
now operates separately, in Charlottesville, VA. BIA is the nation's only
nonprofit organization committed to creating a better future through brain
injury prevention, research, education and advocacy. The Association supports
and coordinates training of physicians, clinicians, educators and other
professionals. BIA actively promotes and communicates new technologies and
advancements related to brain injuries.
