Indy 500 Practice Tuesday
Greg Ray

Practice Notes/Quotes - Tuesday, May 18, 1999
The 83rd Indianapolis 500
Indianapolis Motor Speedway

In another rain-shortened day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Greg
Ray dusted off another car from the Team Menard arsenal and was quick to
bring it up to speed. After driving the primary #2 Glidden-Menards
Dallara/Aurora/ Firestone entry to a lap of 223.214 mph, he recorded his
first laps in the primary #32 Glidden-Menards Dallara/Aurora/Firestone
entry. Within four laps, the first for that car this week, Ray was
within one-thousandth of a second in lap time and an average speed of
223.209 mph. Those fast laps were good enough for fourth- and
fifth-best overall at the Speedway today. Scott Goodyear topped the
charts at 223.842 mph. Ray's modern-day IRL track record run of 225.887
mph in the #2 Glidden-Menards car on Saturday still stands as the
fastest in practice. Practice resumes Wednesday with Pole Day qualifying
set for Saturday (May 22).

GREG RAY - "Today was primarily an exercise and not a speed assault.
The big victory for us was that we finally ran our third car and now we
have three cars withing spitting distance of each other in speed. That
just confirms that whatever we do to one car can be replicated in
another, and then another. What a tribute to the everyone on this
Glidden-Menards team. The conditions were different yet again, which
made it interesting. The wind was blowing from a different direction.
We accomplished some of our goals for the day. We were going to take
Wednesday off, but now, with the rain delay hours at the start of
the day), that remains to be seen."
