California State Automobile Association to Acquire Western United Insurance Company

SAN FRANCISCO--May 18, 1999--The California State Automobile Association (CSAA) Inter-Insurance Bureau today announced an agreement to acquire Western United Insurance Company.
Western United will serve as the exclusive provider of non-standard automobile insurance products to AAA members in Northern California. Non-standard coverage is for drivers whose motor vehicle record has made them ineligible for standard automobile insurance policies.
"Our goal is to provide all AAA members with a solution to their automobile insurance needs," said David Kuizenga, Senior Vice President. "We selected Western United based on their outstanding management team, proven ability to deliver excellent service to policyholders and what we believe will be our ability to jointly develop unique non-standard auto products for AAA members."
"We are extremely excited about the acquisition," said James Schallert, President and Chief Executive Officer, Western United Insurance Company. "Western United's management team has positioned the company for growth and we welcome the opportunity to expand our offering of products and services to AAA members."
Established almost 100 years ago, the California State Automobile Association is the AAA club serving Northern California, Nevada and Utah. The organization serves nearly 4 million members with a full array of automotive, insurance, travel and financial services. The CSAA Inter-Insurance Bureau, established in 1914 is the largest underwriter of personal automobile insurance policies in Northern California.
Western United, headquartered in Newport Beach, California, was established in 1990 and writes non-standard automobile insurance policies throughout California.
