Electric Vehicles Go to the 26th Annual Daytime Emmy Creative Arts Awards

    LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--May 14, 1999--The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power provided emission-free electric vehicles for Bill Nye and Michael Gross, nominees of eight Daytime Emmy Awards, to arrive on Saturday, May 15, Beverly Hilton Hotel, 9876 Wilshire Blvd., International Ballroom at 4 p.m.
    Joining DWP in its fight for cleaner air and a healthier environment, Nye and Gross will drive GM EV1s to the Emmys.
    Nye, a four-time winner, is the host and writer of "Bill Nye the Science Guy." Michael Gross, a six-time winner, is the director and writer. The high-energy educational show is for all ages and is televised on PBS and syndicated by Disney.
    "Disney Presents Bill Nye the Science Guy" is nominated for outstanding directing in a children's series; outstanding achievement in single camera editing; outstanding achievement in lighting direction, outstanding performer in a children's series; outstanding children's series; outstanding achievement in sound editing; outstanding achievement in sound mixing; and outstanding writing in a children's series.
    Nye, who also will serve as one of the presenters at the Emmys, is the regular celebrity moderator for the nationally acclaimed DWP Science Bowl, a fast-paced academic quiz show held every year in February at the Department headquarters. The program recognizes outstanding student achievement in math and science at the high school level.
    DWP is a leader in the promotion of renewable energy, resource conservation and cleaner air. The electric vehicle program exemplifies DWP's commitment to the environment and the improvement of the communities it serves.
    DWP spearheaded Quick Charge L.A., a program to establish or upgrade electric vehicle charging stations at nearly 200 public and private locations, such as the J. Paul Getty Center and Century City Shopping Center. DWP is working with community partners to install an increasing number of charging stations in the city to demonstrate that electric vehicles are viable and useful to a growing number of consumers and businesses.
    The Quick Charge L.A. program received both the Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award, and the 1998 SCAQMD Clean Air Award for Model Community Achievement.
