Gas Prices Level Out; Down in Two Regions, AAA Says

    ORLANDO, Fla.--May 11, 1999--The national average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline increased .7 cent since April to $1.157 per gallon, according to AAA.
    The AAA Fuel Gauge Report shows a price decrease in the Great Lakes by .7 cent to $1.13 and in the Southwest by .6 cent to $1.17.
    AAA's report is based on data from more than 65,000 gasoline transactions from May 7-10.
    The average price of self-serve mid-grade unleaded is $1.246 per gallon, .4 cent more than last month and 5.7 cents more than last year. Self-serve premium averages $1.302, up .6 cent in one month and 5.6 cents from a year ago.
    Regional averages are highest in the West, where self-serve regular unleaded is $1.341 per gallon, no change from last month and 12.7 cents more than last year. It is least expensive in the Southeast at $1.062, up 1 cent in one month and 4.5 cents in one year.
    Other regional prices for self-serve unleaded are: New England, $1.143 cents per gallon, up 2.7 cents since last month; Mid-Atlantic, $1.109, up 2.4 cents; and Midwest, $1.097, up .2 cent.
    The national average prices for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline for the last six months were: April, $1.15 per gallon; March, 97 cents; February, 96 cents; January, 97.9 cents; December, $1.023; and November, $1.055.
    The national average prices for May in the last five years were: 1998, $1.098 per gallon; 1997, $1.242; 1996, $1.307; 1995, $1.196; and 1994, $1.105.
