Siemens Wins Top Honors for Driver Information System
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 5 -- Imagine the impact of a product
in your vehicle that soon will help steer clear of summer construction
tie-ups, apprise you of your stocks' performance, enable you to check e-mail
and provide turn-by-turn guidance through unfamiliar stretches of roadway.
Such a product has been developed from the imaginations of Siemens
Automotive engineers in Auburn Hills, Mich., who recently received top honors
in the annual awards ceremony of the Intelligent Transportation Society of
America (ITS America) held in Washington D.C.
In the category of Outstanding Achievement in Research, Development and
Innovation, Siemens was awarded first place for its patented state-of-the-art
Traveler Information System (TIS(TM)), called Quick-Scout(TM) from nationwide
nominations by ITS America members.
"The on-board traveler information system industry is on the verge of
taking off in North America and we believe Siemens will be one of the leaders
with products such as Quick-Scout(TM)," said Ron Knockeart, Siemens vice
president of Intelligent Transportation.
QuickScout(TM) utilizes cellular communications to access "real-time"
information related to traffic conditions along a specific vehicle's route.
Prior to departing for a routine destination, the system would alert the
driver to any incidents, accidents or congestion points along segments of a
preferred route. The system also provides emergency road-side assistance and
Internet access.
In all, ITS America presented 16 achievement awards and two special
recognition awards honoring members' outstanding efforts. More than 64
contestants vied for the honors in the 18 categories; a complete list of
winners is available on the ITS Web site, http://www.itsa.org.
John Collins, president and CEO of ITS America, said the quality and
volume of annual award nominations was impressive. "The winners in each of
these categories truly represent the best of 1998's advancements in ITS.
We're proud of all the winners in this contest that featured the best use of
transportation technologies to save lives, time and money."
Siemens Automotive is a tier-one supplier of automotive and
electrical-electronic systems and components with applications covering
gasoline and diesel powertrain systems, safety and chassis systems, body
electronics, electric motor drives and driver information systems. Worldwide
sales in fiscal year 1997/1998 totaled $3.3 billion.
