Honda Hosts Child Safety Awareness Day at Dealerships Nationwide- Event Aimed at Increasing Community Awareness of Daily Child Safety Issues - TORRANCE, Calif., April 28 -- More than 1 million children are killed or injured each year in preventable traffic, household and recreational accidents. In the hopes of reducing this number, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and more than 400 Honda dealers nationwide are hosting the company's second-annual Child Safety Awareness Day on Saturday, May 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Child Safety Awareness Day offers families valuable information and hands-on instruction on a variety of issues including vehicle and traffic safety, sport and recreational injuries and preventing child abduction. Parents also will be advised on methods of monitoring their child's Internet usage and protecting them from a variety of household hazards. In addition, attendees can learn from demonstrations on the proper installation of child safety seats and the correct use of seatbelts. Literature on child safety in vehicles containing airbags will also be distributed. In conjunction with Polaroid's Project KidCare, free children's "photo passports" will be taken to provide parents with information vital to the recovery of missing children. More than 1 million children run away, are reported missing or are abducted each year. Tips to prevent child abuse and abduction will be distributed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In most locations, community organizations will be at the dealerships to provide demonstrations and informative talks on child safety issues. A Little League baseball instructional video, Safety First, featuring tips from former Major League Baseball stars Steve Garvey and Steve Lyons, will be shown at each of the participating dealerships. The video teaches the basics of the game and contains important pointers aimed at getting to the game safely and playing without injury. "Honda started Child Safety Awareness Day last year because education and prevention are two of the best ways to keep families safe," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The Honda dealer network provides an excellent opportunity to bring child education and safety expertise to local communities across the U.S." The dealership-based programs were developed by Honda in cooperation with Little League Baseball, Polaroid's Project KidCare, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As part of its ongoing sponsorship of Little League Baseball, Honda has developed a Child Safety Awareness Day raffle as a fundraising opportunity for the organization. Almost 800 local leagues will sell raffle tickets to raise as much as $800,000. Raffle prizes include four all-expense paid trips to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., and an all-new 1999 Odyssey minivan.
