Gas Prices Up 18 Cents in One Month, AAA Shows

    ORLANDO, Fla.--April 20, 1999--The national average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline increased 18 cents since March 16 to $1.15 per gallon, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report.
    Prices increased 6.2 cents since AAA's special issue of the report on March 31. The average is up 7.1 cents from April 1998, when the price was $1.079 per gallon.
    AAA's report is based on data from more than 65,000 gasoline transactions from April 16-19.
    The average price of self-serve mid-grade unleaded is $1.242, 17.7 cents more than March 16 and 7.1 cents more than last year. Self-serve premium averages $1.296, up 17.2 cents in one month and 6.9 cents from a year ago.
    Regional averages are highest in the West, where self-serve regular unleaded is $1.341 per gallon, up 23.7 cents in one month and 16.1 cents in one year. It is least expensive in the Southeast at $1.052, up 15.6 cents in one month and 4.3 cents in one year. Other regional prices for self-serve unleaded are: New England, $1.116 cents per gallon, up 13.3 cents since last month; Mid-Atlantic, $1.085, up 14.1 cents; Great Lakes, $1.14, up 18.6 cents; Midwest, $1.095, up 17.2 cents; and Southwest, $1.176, up 23.4 cents.
    The national average prices for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline for the last six months were: March, 97 cents per gallon; February, 96 cents; January, 97.9 cents; December, $1.023; November, $1.055; and October, $1.066.
    The national average prices for April in the last five years were: 1998, $1.079 per gallon; 1997, $1.253; 1996, $1.24; 1995, $1.128; and 1994, $1.086.
