Dow Announces New Corrosion-Inhibited Deicer

LUDINGTON, Mich.--April 14, 1999--A new corrosion-inhibited deicer is being introduced by The Dow Chemical Company for highway anti-icing applications as well as for rock salt and abrasive prewetting and stockpile wetting applications.
According to Gerry Matthews, Dow North American Industry Manager, this new material has passed corrosion performance tests and was shown to be four times less corrosive to public vehicles and highway snow removal equipment than ordinary rock salt.
The new product is called LIQUIDOW(a) ARMOR(a) Deicer. The chemical exceeds the corrosion specifications as developed by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Standard TM-01-69 (1976 rev.) as modified by the Pacific Northwest States Coalition (PNS) and other agencies. A corrosion value of 70% less corrosive than rock salt is considered passing. Dow also notes that LIQUIDOW ARMOR Deicer meets the purity requirements as specified by PNS, as well as ASTMD-9893 and AASHTO M144-86.
Matthews adds that a unique characteristic of LIQUIDOW ARMOR Deicer, unlike most competitive products, is its ability to remain in liquid form at temperatures as low as -17 degrees Fahrenheit. LIQUIDOW ARMOR Deicer stays in solution due to the fact that it is manufactured under strict Dow quality standards. It does not contain insoluble impurities such as sulfates, carnallite and other by-products that are found in other inhibited deicers. This minimizes the need for circulation and the possibility of LIQUIDOW ARMOR Deicer crystallizing in tanks, pipes, pumps and spreading equipment -- a reported problem with other inhibited deicers.
When used as an anti-icing agent, the recommended application rate of LIQUIDOW ARMOR Deicer is 20-50 gallons per lane mile, lesser amounts (10-20 gallons per lane mile) are used to control frost and black ice. This will vary according to approaching storm conditions and service level requirements. As a prewetting agent, the chemical is typically applied at the rate of 6-10 gallons per ton of material.
