WHAT: Press conference unveiling new PSA featuring E.T. --
The Extra Terrestrial, encouraging kids to use seat belts,
a result of an agreement between Progressive Insurance,
Universal Studios and Amblin Entertainment.
WHY: -- Need to increase safety awareness and encourage seat belt
usage. More kids are killed in automobile crashes during
the summer months.
-- Every 14 seconds someone in America is in a traffic crash.
Every 12 minutes someone is killed in a crash.
-- Seat belts are estimated to save 9,500 lives in America
each year. Increasing seat belt use is the single most
effective thing to save lives and prevent injuries on
America's roadways.
-- The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's
(NHTSA) "Buckle Up America" program goal is to increase
seat belt usage in the U.S. from 68% to 90% by the year
2005.
