Lowest Fuel Prices Since 1979, AAA Survey Shows


    ORLANDO, Fla.--Jan. 19, 1999--The national average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline has decreased 4.4 cents in one month to 97.9 cents per gallon, according to AAA.
    AAA's Fuel Gauge Report shows that unleaded gas prices haven't been this low since they averaged 96.1 cents per gallon in 1979. The current price is 18.1 cents cheaper than last January's average price of $1.159.
    The average price of self-serve mid-grade unleaded is $1.075, 4.1 cents lower than last month and 16.7 cents below last year. Self-serve premium averages $1.133, down 3.9 cents in one month and down 17.4 cents since last year.
    Self-serve regular unleaded is most expensive in the West at $1.093 per gallon, down 8.6 cents in one month and 22 cents in one year. It is least expensive in the Southeast at 90.7 cents, down 4.6 cents in one month and 17.1 cents in one year.
    Other regional prices for self-serve unleaded are: New England, $1.023 per gallon, down 3.1 cents since last month; Mid Atlantic, 97.2 cents, down 4.3 cents; Great Lakes, 96 cents, down 1 cent; Midwest, 92.2 cents, down 2.9 cents; and Southwest, 93.5 cents, down 3.9 cents.
    The national average prices for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline for the last six months were: December, $1.023 per gallon; November, $1.055; October, $1.066; September, $1.057; August, $1.075; July, $1.099.
    The national average prices for January in the last five years were: 1998, $1.159 per gallon; 1997, $1.288; 1996, $1.139; 1995, $1.13; 1994, $1.06 and 1993, $1.103.
