NavTech Database Takes Drivers Across the USA On a Single Map CD

ROSEMONT, Ill.--Dec. 21, 1998--Navigation Technologies Corporation, the leading developer of map databases used by in-vehicle navigation products for North America and Europe, today announced the availability of RouteUSA, a new map database product that provides driving directions and point-of-interests for the North American interstate and state highway network.
RouteUSA contains an exact digital representation of the road network enabling route guidance and turn-by-turn directions for thousands of miles of state and interstate highways. When combined with any of Navigation Technologies' nine Detailed Coverage Area (DCA) map data products of the United States, RouteUSA becomes the most detailed and comprehensive map database available for North America.
RouteUSA includes coverage of interstate highways connecting more than 300 metropolitan areas and major rest areas, and includes points of interest (POIs) such as restaurants, hotels, and gas stations located at rest stops, making it ideal for long distance travelers such as tourists, RV campers, truck drivers and business travelers. In addition, RouteUSA contains county and state boundaries, bay, harbor and ocean locations as well as, logical road connections within major metropolitan areas. Automobile and electronic systems manufacturers are expected to begin merging the RouteUSA database into their product offerings in early 1999. Consumers will be able to purchase new map CDs that include the RouteUSA network late next year.
"RouteUSA provides drivers with the ability to plan a trip from their home state or region across the entire country and back without having to change a map CD," said Andy Donchak, corporate vice president of consumer marketing, Navigation Technologies. "Consumer demand for our equivalent product in Europe, Major Roads of Europe, has been a tremendous success with more than 50 percent of our users opting to purchase this new product."
Navigation Technologies creates and markets the world's most widely-used navigation database, used in every in-vehicle navigation system in North America and the majority of those on the road in Europe. The company's team of full-time cartographers drive more than 1 million miles each year to update and test the quality of the NAVTECH database against real world conditions to ensure accuracy and reliability.
