Atlanta Welcomes the Ultimate Drive(TM) For The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer FoundationCommunities & Volunteers Complete Five-Month-Long Fundraising Effort To Raise $1 Million to Help Eradicate Breast Cancer ATLANTA, Nov. 14 -- BMW of North America and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation today announced a successful close to The 1998 The Ultimate Drive For The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. BMW President Victor Doolan presented Komen Foundation founding chairman Nancy Brinker with a check for $1 million at the closing ceremonies. Senator Paul Coverdell, R-Georgia, also participated in the program, to help honor local hero Dr. Dee Baldwin, a pioneer in the field of breast cancer awareness in the African American community. For the past five months, people across the country have participated in the program by test driving a specially marked BMW and, together, have driven one million miles. BMW donated one dollar for every mile. Two specially marked fleets of vehicles drove into Atlanta for a three-day closing event at Perimeter Mall, Nov. 13-15, to reach the million-mile goal. BMW was recently honored by the Komen Foundation with the 1998 Award for Corporate Community Service for its support of breast cancer efforts in communities throughout the country, and for helping to raise awareness of the importance of early detection. "The support throughout these communities is extraordinary," said Nancy Brinker, founding chairman of the Komen Foundation. "BMW has demonstrated a high level of support and commitment for the Komen Foundation and its cause. This program creates tremendous awareness and provides consumers with a fun and unique way to join in the fight against breast cancer." "BMW is very pleased to team up again with The Komen Foundation. Last year, we were tremendously impressed by the commitment of time and energy that the volunteers, drivers and our centers brought to the program. Without the truly extraordinary efforts of the communities, we would not be able to reach our goal of $1 million to help fight breast cancer," said BMW of North America president Victor Doolan. "We are pleased that our people and our products can provide a catalyst to raise money and community awareness in this important effort." "I am very proud to be here today to help honor Dr. Dee Baldwin, an Atlanta resident who is out there, making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Like all Americans, I am deeply concerned about breast cancer, which is the most common form of cancer among women in the United States. Approximately 44,000 women and 400 men will die of this disease each year. And that is what makes what BMW and The Komen Foundation are doing here so important. This program is a great way to raise awareness and money for research, and I'm very pleased to be part of it," said Senator Paul Coverdell, R-Georgia. Throughout the five-month program, participants were invited to memorialize loved ones in a special way. The "Wall of Support" is a unique collage that combines over 5,000 panels personalized with statements and other sentimental tokens of encouragement in the fight against breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. The Foundation is a national organization with a network of volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. BMW of North America, Inc. was established in 1975, when the company assumed marketing and distribution responsibilities of BMW vehicles in the U.S. from the previous private distributor. Since then the company's North American operations have grown to include marketing, sales and financial services organizations in the United States and Canada; a South Carolina manufacturing operation; a design firm in California; and various other operations throughout the U.S. and Canada. BMW is represented in North America through a network of more than 370 automobile and 190 motorcycle retailers in the United States and Canada. BMW (US) Holding Corp., the brand's North American headquarters, is located in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
