Lincoln LS Charges on Stage at the California International Auto Show
     Horsepower and Torque Numbers Announced for New Luxury Sports Sedan

    ANAHEIM, Cal., Oct. 14 -- The new Lincoln LS came another
step closer to market today with the release of performance figures --
including an over 250 horsepower V-8 engine -- at the California International
Auto Show.
    The 2000 Lincoln LS will take on the best European and Japanese luxury
sports sedans next year with a comprehensive range of powertrain offerings:

    *  A 210 horsepower V-6

    *  A 252 horsepower V-8

    *  A five-speed manual transmission

    *  A five-speed automatic transmission

    * A "SelectShift" manually shifting automatic transmission.

    "Lincoln LS is a new kind of Lincoln that appeals to customers looking for
a complete package of comfort and performance," said Jim O'Sullivan, group
brand manager for Lincoln.
    O'Sullivan announced horsepower and torque numbers for the two new,
all-aluminum double-overhead camshaft engines that will power LS. The
3.0-liter V-6 produces 210 horsepower (SAE net) at 6,500 rpm with peak torque
of 205 ft. lbs. at 4,750 rpm. The V-8 produces 252 horsepower (SAE net) at
6,100 rpm, with peak torque of 267 ft. lbs. at 4,300 rpm.
    Both powerplants are mated to one of three transmissions engineered to
bring out the sporty nature of LS.
    The LS V-6 will be available with an automatic transmission of a
new-generation five-speed close ratio manual with overdrive -- the first
manual in a Lincoln since the 1951 Cosmopolitan. The manual transmission is
from Getrag in Germany
    The LS V-8 will offer a new five-speed automatic overdrive transmission,
or an optional dual gate "SelectShift" that will hold the selected gear right
up to the tachometer redline where a computerized fuel shut-off prevents
over-revving.
    Lincoln is the luxury brand of Lincoln Mercury. Headquartered in Irvine,
CA, Lincoln Mercury provides a full range of Lincoln and Mercury cars and
trucks.
    Lincoln LS will be manufactured at the company's Wixom, MI, plant. It is
scheduled for introduction in mid-1999. Pricing has not been set.
