SmarTire Debut at Automechanika Show a Success

RICHMOND, British Columbia--Oct. 14, 1998--For the first time in its history, SmarTire Systems Inc. (OTC BB:SMTR) (VSE:SES.) participated in Automechanika, the European automotive trade show which ranks number one in the world.
Held every two years in Frankfurt, Germany, this six-day event consisted of 3,400 exhibitors welcoming 150,000 visiting distributors from 150 different countries.
Displaying the Company's tire monitoring systems, the impressive SmarTire booth attracted a steady flow of interested distributors. By the end of the week, 150 quality trade inquiries representing 30 European countries had been received. It is noteworthy that the only tire monitoring product that was actually available for demonstration at the show was the SmarTire(tm) system.
Ian Bateman, managing director of SmarTire Europe Limited, who spearheaded the Company's presence at the show stated, "Automechanika was an excellent venue at which to debut SmarTire(tm) systems and the favorable reception confirms to us the tremendous sales potential of the European market. We intend to follow up every lead and also participate in future trade shows in order that SmarTire establishes a firm presence in the European marketplace. One thing is certain, we are the leader in the field."
SmarTire Systems Inc. is the developer and marketer of proprietary tire monitoring systems for the North American and European automotive markets. The Company is pursuing the passenger car market segment in response to the introduction of the new "run-flat" tires. Goodyear, Michelin and Bridgestone/Firestone have all approved the current SmarTire(TM) system for use with their run-flat tires. Through a strategic alliance, SmarTire and TRW Inc. are committed to providing superior tire monitoring systems for both aftermarket and original equipment applications.
