Volkswagen Reports September Sales - Up Nearly 63 Percent, Best in 13 Years

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 2 -- With sales of 18,228,
Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its best September sales results since
1985.
    This figure represents a 62.7 percent increase over last year's September
figure of 11,203.
    It marks the best September for the German automaker in the U.S. since
1985.
    For the year, Volkswagen also is far ahead of last year's pace.  Year-to-
date, Volkswagen has sold 170,573 new cars, up 61 percent over the same period
in 1997 when sales were 105,930.
    Volkswagen remains the top-selling European importer in the U.S.
