PACCAR Provides Research Vehicle to Virginia Technical Center

BELLEVUE, Wash.--Sept. 21, 1998--PACCAR Inc announced today that it donated a Peterbilt truck to the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to support development of intelligent transportation systems, according to Mark C. Pigott, chairman and chief executive officer.
Virginia Tech established the CTR in August 1988 to conduct research in the latest transportation technologies. It is both a Federal Highway Research Center of Excellence and a Mid-Atlantic University Transportation Center.
The Peterbilt 379 will be used to evaluate Intelligent Transportation System technologies under real-world driving conditions. The instrumented truck will be capable of recording a variety of electronic and video real-time data for use in safety and human factors experiments. Research areas under investigation include collision warning and avoidance systems, driver fatigue, and effects of new technologies on operator performance and safety.
"We have formed a partnership with many positive implications for PACCAR and The Virginia Tech as well as for the industry and motoring public," said Margaret Sullivan, general manager, PACCAR Technical Center. "The Virginia Technical Center and PACCAR share a passion for innovation, safety and driver comfort. The Center is a premier research organization, and we are proud of our association with them."
