GSA Drives Green Across the U.S.A.Trip from Washington, DC, to Scottsdale, AZ, Highlights GSA's Effort to Purchase More Alternative Fuel Vehicles WASHINGTON, July 17 -- To highlight efforts to add more alternative fuel vehicles to the Federal fleet, employees of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) made a five-day trip across America in a Ford Crown Victoria that operates entirely on compressed natural gas. The trip began at GSA Headquarters in Washington, DC, and ended in Scottsdale, AZ, at the site of the first National Federal Fleet Manager Workshop and Information Fair, to be held there July 20-23. The event in Scottsdale will include technology workshops on different types of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), a tour of a state-of-the-art AFV refueling facility, and several other sessions related to the increasingly environmental approach being taken to fleet management. The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT) requires the Federal government to procure large numbers of AFVs in the coming years as a means of fostering energy security and a cleaner environment. GSA plays an important role in facilitating the Federal government's implementation of EPACT through its government-wide vehicle policy, acquisition, and management functions. "GSA has purchased more alternative fuel vehicles from auto manufacturers than any other organization in this country," said Frank Pugliese, Commissioner of GSA's Federal Supply Service. "In our commitment to EPACT and the Clinton Administration's aggressive environmental goals, we are continuing to look for ways to increase the use of alternative fuel vehicles and make them more available to our Federal customers." Since 1991, GSA has purchased approximately 20,000 alternative fuel vehicles for Federal agencies. Travel Itinerary for GSA Drives Green Across the U.S.A.
