TRW Sponsors Eight Detroit-Area Students for Space Camp

1 July 1998

TRW Sponsors Eight Detroit-Area Students for Space Camp From the Farmington Hills and Washington Areas
FARMINGTON HILLS and WASHINGTON, Mich., July 1 -- TRW's
automotive electronics business in Farmington Hills and occupant restraint
systems operations in Washington are each sending four local middle school
students on an all-expense-paid trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.,
from July 11-17.
The sponsorships are being coordinated by TRW's Detroit-area operations --
which employ more than 2,300 people in seven facilities -- and the TRW
Foundation, which is sending a total of 60 students from the United States and
the United Kingdom.
TRW has sponsored the Space Camp program since 1995, each year offering
the program to students in about a dozen locations where there is significant
TRW employment.
"TRW has awarded the scholarships to motivate young people toward greater
achievements in math and science," said Laura Johnson, TRW contributions
manager. "We believe the Space Camp experience stimulates students about
science and technology and inspires them to achieve academic excellence."
The students from schools near TRW's Washington 26 Mile Road facilities
(located in the Romeo/Rochester area) are Julia Anderson and Vincent Powierski
from Powell Middle School in Washington and Richland Ford and Carrie Hartway
from Romeo Middle School in Romeo.
The Farmington Hills students are Tony Boitkus and Jenna Range of Power
Middle School, Sufna Gheyara of Dunkel Middle School and Nicole White of
Warner Middle School.
The TRW Foundation sponsorships cover travel, tuition, room and board and
genuine NASA uniforms. The recruits will train on the Low Gravity Chair and
assume the role of mission specialists working in a simulated weightless
environment. They will explore the history of manned space flight,
investigate the propulsion systems that put space shuttles in orbit, review
films of astronaut missions and simulate their own launch.
TRW is the world's largest supplier of occupant restraint systems,
including air bags, seat belts, steering wheels and electronics. The company
also is a leading supplier of automotive electronics and provides advanced
technology products and services for the space, defense and information
technology markets.
