Car Safety Seat Do's and Don'ts at Jiffy Lube Sponsored Event

29 June 1998

A Record Number of Pregnant Women and Their Families Converge to Learn Car Safety Seat Do's and Don'ts at Jiffy Lube Sponsored Event
Pickles, Ice Cream and Car Seats

HOUSTON, June 27 -- Is your infant car seat installed right?
That was the question of the day for more than 400 pregnant women and families
who gathered for a Buckle Up America Safety Seminar today. The event,
sponsored by Jiffy Lube as the launch of its Buckle Up America national
awareness campaign, drove home the fact that eight out of every 10 infant car
seats are installed incorrectly.
"I knew having my kids buckled up was important," said Carolyn Trieschman,
mother of two. "I knew my car seats weren't as safe as they should be, but I
didn't know how to make it better." A car seat was given away every three
minutes -- 40 in all -- during the event where doctors and safety experts
spoke about driving safely while pregnant, car seats and buckling up. With
the target of reaching pregnant women, refreshments included both pickles and
ice cream.
"Jiffy Lube, Fisher-Price(R), the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign and
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have a simple
'ABC' message," said Janet Dewey, executive director of the Air Bag & Seat
Belt Safety Campaign. "Air bag safety means: Always slide the seat back and
sit back! Buckle everyone! Children in back!"
The event also featured a drive-thru car seat inspection conducted by
NHTSA certified inspectors, where approximately 95 percent of those inspected
were installed incorrectly. Information on car seat safety and installation
can be found at all Jiffy Lube service centers nationwide through July 5.
Customers also will receive a $5 off coupon for a Fisher-Price Safe
Embrace(TM) Infant Car Seat.
"July 4th weekend is a great holiday to spend with family and friends, but
because so many people are on the roads, people need to learn how to best
protect themselves," said Jim Wheat, president of Jiffy Lube International,
Inc. "Jiffy Lube is proud to send an important message to mothers-to-be and
families: buckling up saves lives. It's that simple."
Jiffy Lube, a wholly owned subsidiary of Houston-based Pennzoil Company
, originated in 1979 and pioneered the fast oil change industry.
Today the company has the largest number of outlets -- 1,550 company and
franchise-owned throughout the United States.
