ITT Automotive Brings Driver Safety to Washington D.C.
Congressman Davis and Other Members' Participation
                     Benefit the National Safety Council

WASHINGTON, June 25 -- The ITT Automotive Drive Safer
America! Road Show arrived on Capitol Hill today to demonstrate safe and
correct driving skills and to reinforce to the nation's leaders the benefits
of four-wheel anti-lock brakes. Committed to improved driver safety,
Representative Tom Davis (R-Va.) and Representative Dale Kildee (D-MI) lent
their support to this nationwide consumer-awareness initiative by
participating in a press briefing and testing the ITT Automotive virtual-
reality simulator.
ITT Automotive developed the first four-wheel anti-lock brake virtual-
reality simulator and interactive exhibits - housed in a multi-million dollar
tractor trailer - as part of its Drive Safer America! campaign to inform
motorists. In the simulator, drivers experience the difference between four-
wheel anti-lock brakes and conventional brakes while dealing with the effects
of hard braking situations.
"ITT Automotive is doing a great job educating the American public on the
benefits and proper use of ABS brakes, and, in the long term, saving lives,"
stated Representative Tom Davis (R-Va).
To reduce fatalities caused by driver error, the Drive Safer America! Road
Show is touring the country to inform Americans with driver safe operating
techniques. "Ninety-four percent of all fatal crashes are a result of driver
error," stated Bill Kozyra, vice president of ITT Automotive. "If we can save
one life by teaching motorists safer driving skills, then this nation-wide
effort will be a success," he concluded.
Demonstrating its commitment to safety, ITT Automotive made a donation to
improve safety on the nation's highways. For every member of Congress who
attended its legislative briefing Thursday afternoon, ITT Automotive donated
$500 to the National Safety Council's Foundation for Safety and Health.
"Driver safety education is very important to me, and ITT Automotive's
campaign is well done," said Representative Dale Kildee (D-MI). "I
particularly like the high-tech use of the virtual-reality machines to give
the driver a realistic effect of driving conditions."
ITT Automotive is an industry leader in the development of automotive
safety technology. The company has taken a leadership role in informing
motorists about how to use the latest automobile safety technologies. Early
in 1997, ITT Automotive partnered with Indy Car driver and automotive expert
Lyn St. James to develop a series of safe-driving techniques for all drivers
to practice.
ITT Automotive's safety information is available to consumers free of
charge. The Drive Safer America! brochure and instructional video are
available by calling toll-free (800) 694-5200 or by visiting ITT Automotive at

four-wheel anti-lock braking systems is available by calling toll-free (887)
