SCA Announces Mazda 'Save Our American Resources' (SOAR) ProgramCHARLESTOWN, N.H., June 4 -- The Student Conservation Association (SCA) today announced a new environmental initiative, the Mazda "Save Our American Resources" (SOAR) Program. During 1998, the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc., is sponsoring a natural or cultural resource management volunteer at a national park, forest, or monument in each of the 50 states. The Mazda SOAR volunteers begin their conservation activities this summer at parks nationwide. "SCA is extremely pleased to receive a Mazda Foundation grant for the SOAR program," said SCA President Dale M. Penny. "This initiative represents the first time in our history that we will field a conservation intern in each of the 50 states during the program year. Both our interns and the natural resource management sites will benefit from the expanded scope that the Mazda SOAR Intern Program brings to SCA's volunteer projects on public lands. We are grateful for the Mazda Foundation's support," Penny said. The 50 SOAR volunteers will carry out a variety of conservation and environmental protection projects, including endangered species protection, air and water quality monitoring, backcountry patrol, visitor interpretation and guidance programs, environmental education projects, monument and site restoration, and archaeological digs and surveys. SCA is the nation's largest and oldest provider of national and community service opportunities in conservation, involving both student and adult volunteers in the stewardship of public land and natural and cultural resources. The Mazda Foundation (USA) was established in 1990 to demonstrate Mazda's commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities in which they do business. In addition to environmental conservation and education, the Mazda Foundation supports charitable organizations that promote literacy, education, cross-cultural understanding and social welfare.
