Nissan Awards $50,000 in College Scholarships to Project Excellence ScholarsWASHINGTON, May 14 -- Nissan North America, Inc. will award college scholarships totaling $50,000 to five Washington area students tonight during the 11th annual Project Excellence dinner at the Capitol Hilton hotel. Project Excellence, founded by syndicated journalist Carl T. Rowan in 1987, was designed to encourage black high school scholars to excel academically to counter negative peer pressures that ridiculed black students who worked hard to get good grades and who excelled in the use of the English language. Nissan has participated in the program for three years, donating $165,000. "These students should be commended not only for their outstanding academic accomplishments but for their courage in overcoming negative peer pressure for making good grades," said Ed Lewis, a Nissan Corporate Communications Manager based in Washington. "Nissan avidly supports education programs aimed at motivating young to demonstrate leadership potential. That's why we are thrilled to be partners with Project Excellence." The five Nissan scholarship recipients are: * Vanessa Adrien, Washington International School * Zachary Bodine, Landon School * Stephanie Bowles, Frederick Douglass High School * Tiffany Johnson, Paint Branch High School * Jeanne Lewis, Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School The donation was made under the Nissan Neighbors program, a corporate-wide umbrella for Nissan's corporate giving. The program was created to demonstrate Nissan's commitment to the communities in which it operates nationwide.
