Breed Technologies Announces Winners of Macomb County Seat Belt Contest

    STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., May 12 -- Lutheran North High
School, located in Macomb Township, has won the annual Macomb (County) High
School Seat Belt Contest sponsored by Breed Technologies .
    "It's crucial that we encourage good driving habits and educate young
drivers of the importance of occupant safety," said Johnnie Breed, CEO of
Breed Technologies.
    Contest organizers from the Macomb Traffic Information Organization will
honor students at an award ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at
Lutheran North High School.  Macomb County Sheriff William Hackel will award
$1,000 and a plaque to Lutheran North students.  In addition, second and third
place plaques and checks of $500 and $250, will be awarded to student
representatives from Henry Ford II and De La Salle Collegiate high schools.
    "We are very pleased with the contest results," said Peter M. Provenzano,
president of Macomb Traffic Information Organization (MTIO) and senior quality
liaison engineer for Breed Technologies.
    "Lutheran North has 544 students, and we calculated that its seat belt
usage was 91.3 percent," Provenzano explained.  "Henry Ford II was second
place with 76 percent and third place was De La Salle Collegiate with 73
percent."
    Thirty-two high schools participated in the Macomb High School Seat Belt
Contest and over 40 members of the MTIO and local police departments helped
track seat belt usage and calculate winners.
    Macomb Traffic Information Organization consists of law enforcement
officers and private business and county leaders from Macomb County and local
government.  The organization strives to promote a safe environment for all
Macomb County residents -- from infants to senior citizens -- through
classroom education and public demonstrations.  Topics include drug programs,
such as DARE and the proper use of seat belts and child safety seats.
