Chrysler Corporation & PAL Race to Bring Good Fortune to Detroit's YouthAUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 8 -- At this year's Detroit Grand Prix on June 5-7, the PPG Neon Charity Challenge will again feature an impressive roster of civic leaders, corporate executives and local media in a race benefiting one of Detroit's leading charities, the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL). This unique race format was launched last year by the Chrysler Corporation . It was successful in providing excitement for race fans but, more importantly, good fortune totaling $185,000 for the children of PAL. With each participant making a donation to PAL and the Chrysler Fund matching those donations, dollar-for-dollar, this year's event is expected to raise over $200,000. "This event captures the spirit of Detroit and is a unanimous win for everyone involved," said Bill Tracy, Manager Motorsports and Performance Marketing, Chrysler Corporation. "Our goal is to exceed last year's donation to PAL, which works so hard in providing valuable assistance and opportunities to Detroit's youth. " PAL, founded in 1970, serves more than 8,000 Detroit youths. While the organization is widely known for its 12 athletic programs, it also has three education and activity centers that provide recreational and learning opportunities, and tutorial sites at six Detroit public schools, which improve math and reading skills while helping build self-esteem. "We are extremely grateful to Chrysler for again selecting PAL as the beneficiary for this year's PPG Neon Charity Challenge," said PAL President, Tom Wagner. "The funds will help support PAL's ongoing commitment to the youth of Detroit." This year's Charity Challenge will consist of two rounds, one contested on Saturday, June 6 and the other on Sunday, June 7. Details regarding both competitions will be released closer to the event date. Also new for this year's event is the title sponsorship with PPG Industries , a major global supplier of high-quality products for cars, homes, aircraft, commercial construction and chemical processing. Tracy added: "PPG has been a great supporter of the series since its inception. PPG sponsored the very first Neon Super Cup in 1995 and has been part of our team ever since." Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company , which has been providing the Celebrity and Charity Challenge tires since 1995, is on board this season as an official series sponsor providing tires and technical support at all PPG Neon Challenge events in 1998. The first race will be televised on ESPN2 on a tape delay basis (date and time to be announced). Neons have become a hugely popular means of going racing. It is the grassroots racer of choice in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) competition, with nearly 6,000 American Competition Racing (ACR) coupes and sedans purchased since their 1994 introduction. Last year alone, Neon racers earned six championships and racked up over 300 podium finishes in 219 events. SOURCE Chrysler Corporation
