Automotive Manufacturing Industry Leaders Rally for Education; Student Achievements Showcased
WARRENDALE, Pa., May 7 -- Top automotive manufacturing
industry leaders will gather at the 11th Annual SAE & ESD Foundations Benefit
at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at the Westin Hotel in Detroit, to
support the future of science and math education. With U.S. students lagging
behind those of other developed countries, particularly in the areas of math
and science, this group of visionary executives is eager to help reverse the
trend.
Chrysler Corporation is a strong supporter of the cause, as both the event
sponsor and purchaser of 200 seats of the over 800 sold. Another major
supporter is American Sunroof Company (ASC Incorporated), the co-sponsor of
the event reception.
The benefit is also an award banquet, during which Dennis K. Pawley,
Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, Chrysler Corporation, will receive
the "1998 Manufacturing Leadership Award." The award recognizes meaningful
contributions to the development of the automotive industry, but it goes
beyond that for Pawley.
"Although the award highlights achievements in automotive manufacturing,
it also emphasizes contributions to community and educational activities --
that's what I'm most proud of," Pawley said.
The foundations of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the
Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) raise funds to support educational
programs, specifically in the areas of science and math, that each society
administers. Programs such as A World in Motion, Formula SAE, the
Supermileage Competition, the Future City Competition, and the Science and
Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit are supported by the fundraising
efforts of the SAE and ESD Foundations. Several students who have benefited
from these programs will be on-site to display their projects. Industry
executives will have the opportunity to talk with the students and see first-
hand the value of keeping the next generation excited about math and science.
The 11th Annual SAE & ESD Foundations Benefit will be held in the Columbus
Ballroom at the Westin Hotel, with the reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and
dinner at 7:30 p.m. For more information, please contact the SAE Foundation
at 724-776-4841, ext. 4017.
