Toyota Reports Best-Ever Light Truck Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., April 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS),
U.S.A., Inc., today announced that March was the best month ever for light
trucks with sales of 38,723, up 1.8 percent, breaking the record set over the
same period last year. Leading the way was the strong performance of the
Sienna minivan, which set a March record for a Toyota passenger van with sales
of 7,153.
The Lexus Division finished its best-ever first quarter with
record-setting March sales of 10,672, up 42.9 percent. Leading the way for
Lexus was the strong debut of the all-new RX 300 sport utility vehicle with
1,902 sales. The all-new GS 400/300 performance sedan continued its strong
momentum with sales of 2,638.
Toyota's total March sales of 105,389, were down 13.4 percent from last
year's fourth-best sales month ever and best-ever March. First quarter sales
of 273,533, were down 13 percent from a record-setting 1997.
Toyota's North American-produced vehicles represented 62.8 percent of
total year-to-date sales, up from 62.6 percent the year before.
