AlliedSignal to Exhibit New High-Speed Hydraulic Supercharger at SAE
25 February 1998
AlliedSignal to Exhibit New High-Speed Hydraulic Supercharger at SAEDETROIT, Feb. 25 -- AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems will introduce the new Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger -- a high-speed, hydraulic turbine driven supercharger -- at the SAE International Congress and Exposition, Feb. 23-26. AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems, the world's largest manufacturer and supplier of turbochargers, acquired exclusive rights to the innovative supercharger from Davorin Kapich, president of Kapich Engineering. "AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems is always looking for new and unique technologies that meet the needs of our customers and the environment," said Dr. Mohsen Sohi, Vice President of Engineering and Technology for AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems. "We believe the novel Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger will offer a superior value vis a vis more conventional superchargers on the market today." Based on extensive testing, AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems anticipates the Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger will be extremely reliable with virtually zero maintenance. The supercharger's turbine wheel, covered by a Kapich patent, is a combination of plastic embedded in metal that resists corrosion, creating high durability. Although currently designed for diesel engines with 2.0 liter to 14.0 liter displacement, the Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger can be sized to fit any turbocharged or naturally aspirated, gasoline or diesel application. BENEFITS Benefits of the Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger include immediate boost with minimal parasitic loss; improved low to mid speed torque; and virtual elimination of visible smoke at all altitudes. With a blower speed independent of engine speed, the Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger can provide a controlled boost that can be timed ahead of engine acceleration. The independent closed-loop oil system also allows for continuous or on-demand supercharging which can increase engine torque over a wide range of speeds. For diesel engines, the Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger creates a dramatic increase in air/fuel ratio on demand. This results in increased torque (driveability), lower emissions (smoke and particulates) and improved efficiency (fuel economy). When used in conjunction with a turbocharger, the Hydraulic Supercharger significantly improves boost at all engine speeds. In addition, the new Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger has the potential to act as a pump, as part of a Garrett(R) EGR(TM) System to recirculate exhaust gases. The design can be adapted to meet the most recent regulatory changes in emission standards. FEATURES * Highly efficient compressor-hydraulic turbine combination * Proven turbocharger bearings and seals * Patented, long-life hydraulic turbine construction * Non-horizontal shaft installation for easy packaging * Low-volume closed-loop oil system (change interval 100,000 miles or longer) * Electric or pneumatic signal actuated hydraulic bypass * Independent supercharger speed control * Rotor acceleration rate up to 100,000 rpm/sec "The Garrett(R) Hydraulic Supercharger showcases AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems' commitment to bringing the latest in boosting technology to its customers," said AlliedSignal Turbocharging Systems President, Bill Amelio. "We will do whatever it takes to provide the most innovative systems solutions to increase power, improve performance and reduce emissions for each of our customers' unique needs."
