The Hartford Cuts Auto Insurance Rates in Pennsylvania

Company Introduces Special 'Hartford Premier' Pricing and
                      Significantly Expands Eligibility

HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 17 -- The Hartford Financial Services
Group Inc. , one of the nation's largest and most recognized
providers of personal insurance, has reduced automobile insurance premiums in
Pennsylvania by an average of 2.9 percent, and has expanded efforts to attract
more Pennsylvania auto insurance customers.
The rate reduction is for The Hartford's customers who purchase auto
insurance through independent agents and is the result of improved loss
experience and the success of its cost containment programs. While the
average drop is 2.9 percent, individual premium changes may vary depending on
the policy coverage and other factors that influence insurance premiums.
"Working through the independent agents who represent us, The Hartford
wants to offer each of our customers the best products and services at the
lowest possible cost," said Carter J. Flatt, personal lines vice president.
"Pricing is based on our experience, and when our experience improves, we're
happy to pass on the savings to the customer in the form of lowered rates."
Another way in which The Hartford will pass savings on to the customer is
through 'Hartford Premier,' a new super-preferred pricing tier for the
company's very best customers. Pennsylvania drivers between the ages of
19 and 70 (drivers age 19 to 25 will be eligible on the parents' policy only)
with clean driving records and a minimum of three years driving experience may
qualify for this premier rate.
While only the best drivers will qualify for Hartford Premier rates, The
Hartford also has expanded eligibility so that even some higher-risk drivers
now can qualify for its auto insurance.
All customers can lock in their auto insurance rates for a full year by
purchasing a Hartford auto policy with an independent agent who represents The
Hartford. These policies may include features such as full replacement value
for new cars; a waiver of collision deductible; roadside assistance; 24-hour
claim service 365 days a year; rental car delivery; a repair guarantee; and a
special vehicle locator service to help customers find replacements for
damaged vehicles.
An independent agent who represents The Hartford can provide more
information on new rates and policy benefits.
The Hartford is one of the nation's oldest and largest international
insurance and financial services operations, with 1997 revenues of
$13.3 billion. As of December 31, 1997, The Hartford had assets of
$131.7 billion and shareholders' equity of $6.1 billion. The company is a
leading provider of commercial property and casualty insurance, automobile and
homeowners coverages, and a variety of life insurance, annuities, employee
benefits and asset management plans.
