Hayes Lemmerz International to Consolidate Heavy-Duty Wheel Operations In Akron

ROMULUS, Mich., Jan. 14 -- Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc.
announced today that it will expand its current heavy-duty wheel
facility in Akron, Ohio, to accommodate the heavy-duty wheel operations
recently acquired from Robert Bosch Corporation.
The heavy-duty steel wheel business manufactures and markets tubeless and
tube-type steel wheels for both medium- and heavy-duty trucks and trailers.
Customers include virtually all major original equipment producers as well as
major aftermarket distributors. The total wheel sales of the combined
businesses in 1997 was approximately $85 million.
"The decision to expand the Akron operation is the result of the combined
efforts of the United Steel Workers and the city of Akron to develop a viable
plan to consolidate these two businesses," said Mike McGrath, president of
Hayes Lemmerz commercial highway business. "The combined operations will
provide Hayes Lemmerz with much-needed capacity and additional manufacturing
flexibility."

the world's largest wheel manufacturer and is a world leader in the design,
engineering and manufacture of steel and aluminum wheels and brake drums and
