Chrysler to Offer Nickel Metal Hydride Battery In Epic Electric MinivanORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 11 -- Chrysler Corporation announced today it will be using a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery to boost the energy capacity and enhance the performance of its Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager electric minivans. The five-passenger minivan, called the EPIC (an acronym for Electric Powered Interurban Commuter), will have its driving range increased with the NiMH battery supplied by SAFT America Inc. and will be available in the fall of 1998 for the 1999 model year. Chrysler executives made the announcement here at the 14th International Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS-14). "Chrysler is committed to keeping pace with the developing technology of vehicle traction batteries and improving the competitiveness of an already unique and strong entry in the electric vehicle market," said Jim Cerano, Team EPIC Program Manager. "The nickel metal hydride battery will improve the driving range of the EPIC to 80-90 miles under optimal conditions and give customers a more durable on-board energy source." Chrysler is offering the EPIC to commercial and government fleets in the states of New York and California through a lease rate of $450 per month with $0 money down for a three-year term. As an option, Chrysler is offering a one-time single lease payment of $15,000 for a three-year term. Lease rates are available through Chrysler Financial Corporation. This action demonstrates Chrysler's continued commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology and market development. Between 1993 and 1995, Chrysler sold its first generation TEVans to fleets across the United States. Earlier this year, Chrysler sold EPICS to fleet customers in California.
