Nissan Partnership Warms the Needy in the Nation's Capital

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26 -- Over one thousand Washington-area
families will be warmer this winter thanks to clothing donations collected
from congressional offices as part of the Nissan Neighbors Capitol Hill
Partnership Drive series. This Philanthropic effort, sponsored by Nissan
North America, resulted in more than 3,000 articles of clothing last week --
from gloves and warm coats to business suits -- to benefit Martha's Table, a
local charity providing food, learning and literacy programs to low-income
families and homeless children in Washington, D.C.
"We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity from everyone on
Capitol Hill," said Veronica Parke, President of Martha's Table. "This winter
1,500 Washington families will benefit from their contributions. Thanks to
the generosity of good corporate citizens like Nissan, hundreds of area
families will have a much warmer winter."
In early October, Nissan joined with Martha's Table, Roll Call and Capital
Style to encourage congressional offices to participate in the program. Rep.
Tom Davis (R-VA) joined Nissan and Martha's Table for the final clothing pick
up on November 24. "It's great to see the private sector working to make a
difference in our community. Nissan's initiative should be commended," said
Davis. Both Davis and Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) served as Honorary
Chairmen for the clothing drive, in the House and Senate respectively.
Focused on Capitol Hill, the clothing drive is the first in a series of
two Philanthropic collection programs scheduled for this winter. The second
drive, which will begin in January, will collect educational materials. All
items collected are donated to Martha's Table to benefit the children, the
homeless and the needy in Washington, D.C.
"Nissan has a long history of supporting the communities in which it does
business and Washington, D.C is no exception," said Tim MacCarthy, Vice
President, Government Affairs, Nissan North America. "Our partnership with
Martha's Table, Roll Call and Capital Style is helping us reach those truly in
need this winter, and reflects our long-standing commitment to investing in
America and to being a good neighbor. I also want to express my thanks to all
the House and Senate offices who generously donated clothing to make this
drive such a success."
Nissan employs 12,000 Americans directly and another 61,000 Americans work
at Nissan and Infiniti dealerships. Nissan has invested over $2 billion in
the United States to build facilities for design, research and development,
manufacturing, sales and related operations. 70% of the Nissan cars and trucks
sold in America are built in America. Nissan purchases over $4.2 billion in
parts and materials from 400 U.S. suppliers.
