Earthquake Safety Tips in 9 Languages - AAA Urges Preparedness on Loma Prieta Anniversary

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17 -- What if an earthquake strikes while
you're in your car or home? AAA offers advice in a free comprehensive brochure
in nine languages.
The U.S. Geological Survey predicts there is a 67 percent chance of a
magnitude 7 or larger quake in the Bay Area during the next 30 years.
Widespread roadway damage is expected should a major quake strike one of
the Bay Area's nine major faults, according to a study issued this week by the
Association of Bay Area Governments.
"How well you survive an earthquake often depends on how well you are
prepared," said Vernon C. Thompson, AAA spokesman. "An earthquake could turn
your life upside down. It's always best to be ready."
AAA has a free brochure, "Prepare for the Quake," available in English,
Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Korean and
Armenian.
AAA offers the following key tips regarding driving before, during and
after an earthquake:

    * If driving when a quake strikes, pull over to the side of the road and
stop. Avoid overpasses and power lines. Stay inside your car until the
earthquake is over.
    * If you must continue to drive after a quake, listen to your radio for
information and proceed with caution. Be especially aware of other motorists
who may be shaken and driving unsafely. Be prepared to park and leave your
vehicle if roadways are so damaged it is too dangerous to drive, or if driving
will impede emergency vehicles.
    * If you are not driving, do not use your vehicle unless there is an
emergency. Keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles.
    * Always carry a first aid kit, blanket, flashlight, portable radio with
batteries, local maps, some water, non-perishable food and warm clothing in
your vehicle.

The brochures are available from the lobby of the California State
Automobile Association's main office at 150 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, or
call 415-565-2290 to receive a copy by mail.
The brochure is produced by the Governor's Office of Emergency Services
and CSAA.
The AAA affiliate for Northern California, Nevada and Utah serves nearly 4
million members with an array of automotive, travel and insurance products.
