Special Edition Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee Goes Beyond Expectations

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 7 -- Chrysler Corporation
today announced it will offer a new, Special Edition Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee
Laredo which includes the options customers want most. The suggested base
price for a four-wheel drive Special Edition Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is
$29,515 excluding the $525 destination charge.
The Special Edition Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is loaded with standard
features including ten-way power front seats; eight-speaker, 120-Watt
Infinity(R) Gold Sound System with cassette player, five-band graphic
equalizer and remote audio controls located on the underside of the steering
wheel; vehicle theft security system; overhead console with electronic
compass, outside temperature readout and trip computer; deep tinted sunscreen
glass; electrochromatic day/night rearview mirror; heated, dual-foldaway power
remote mirrors; "Sport" cast aluminum wheels with 225/75R15 Goodyear Wrangler
all-season tires; body-color side-cladding and facias; integrated front fog
lamps and automatic headlamps.
"Grand Cherokee continues to offer legendary Jeep four-wheel drive
capability together with the best combination of overall handling, power and
comfort offered in the segment," said Martin R. Levine, General Manager -
Chrysler/Plymouth/Jeep/Eagle Division. "But we wanted to go beyond customer
expectations with the Special Edition by offering a number of luxury features
as standard and by giving it a few of the characteristics of a Limited with
the monochromatic body-color side-cladding and facias."
The Special Edition Grand Cherokee Laredo is available with either a
4.0-liter, 185 horsepower I-6 that produces 220 foot-pounds of torque at
2400 rpm, or an optional 5.2-liter 220 horsepower V-8 that produces 300
foot-pounds of torque at 2800 rpm.
Selec-Trac, a full-time 4WD system, is standard while the trademarked
on-demand Quadra-Trac system is optional. Quadra-Trac detects wheel slippage
and automatically sends power to the axle with the most traction. It can
balance any ratio of power "on-demand" -- from virtually zero to 100 percent
-- to the front or rear wheels.
Proven Quadra-Coil suspension enhances Grand Cherokee's ride quality under
all road conditions. The high torsional rigidity of the UniBody structure of
Grand Cherokee is another key to the superb ride and secure road manners.
With the introduction of the Special Edition, the Grand Cherokee line for
1998 includes the Laredo, Limited and 5.9 Limited, which is equipped with a
245 horsepower 5.9-liter V-8 engine, to make it the fastest sport-utility
vehicle in the world.
The Special Edition Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo will be assembled at
Chrysler Corporation's Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit.
