Meritor Announces New UAW Contracts For Wisconsin, Ohio Plants

    TROY, Mich., Sept. 30 -- Meritor Automotive, Inc., the
90-year-old automotive unit of Rockwell International, which on October 1 will
complete its spin-off from Rockwell and officially emerge as an independent
company, has announced the ratification of new three-year labor contracts
involving two of its U.S. manufacturing facilities.
    On Friday, September 26, the International Union, United Automobile,
Aerospace and Agriculture Implement Workers of America (UAW) ratified a new
three year Master Agreement involving the company's Oshkosh, Wisconsin and
Newark, Ohio manufacturing plants.  Local agreements with UAW Local 291 in
Oshkosh and UAW Local 1037 in Newark were reached earlier.
    Meritor is a leading global supplier of a broad range of components and
systems for commercial, specialty and light vehicles.  Meritor employs more
than 16,000 people at 58 manufacturing, research and sales facilities in 15
countries.  Based in Troy, Michigan, Meritor serves more than 800 original
equipment manufacturers of automobiles, light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks
and other vehicles.  It reported 1996 sales of $3.1 billion, with 44 percent
of those sales to international customers.
    The company comprises two businesses:  Heavy Vehicle Systems, a leading
supplier of drivetrain systems and components for medium- and heavy-duty
trucks, trailers, off-highway equipment and specialty vehicles including
military, bus and coach, and fire and rescue; and Light Vehicle Systems, a
major supplier of roof, door, access control and seat adjusting systems,
electric motors and electronic controls, suspension systems and wheels for
passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles.
