Detroit to Host Transportation Technology Leaders

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 -- To help stem the rising tide of
traffic congestion and reduce crashes, more than 4,000 professionals in the
use of advanced transportation technologies will convene in Detroit's Cobo
Hall May 4-7, 1998, for the Eighth Annual Meeting of the Intelligent
Transportation Society of America, or ITS America for short.
The largest gatherings of their kind each year, the ITS America annual
meetings bring together industry executives, federal, state and local
government officials, consultants, research scientists, and engineers who
focus on the use of the latest communications, computer, and electronic
technologies to improve surface transportation.
More than 100 technical exhibits will demonstrate ITS products and
services currently in use and available for deployment. More than 70 technical
sessions will offer the latest in research results, technical innovations, and
market developments.
Participants may choose among 12 tours of ITS operational sites, including
the Ambassador Bridge International Border Crossing, the Detroit People Mover
Control Facility, Ford Scientific Research Laboratories, the Oakland County
Traffic Operations Center, and others.
This is the first-ever ITS America Annual Meeting to be held in Detroit.
In a letter to participants, Governor John Engler noted that Michigan is
"eager to showcase the progress of Michigan's Intelligent Transportation
Systems operations."
The Detroit Economic Club has planned a luncheon in connection with the
meeting, at which Vice President Gore has been invited to speak.
Sponsorships available to ITS America members include the 8th Annual
Meeting Home Page on the Internet, literature pages and video clips on the
proceedings CD-ROM, merchandising opportunities, the press room, meals, and
refreshment breaks.
ITS America fosters and coordinates a public/private partnership to make
the U.S. surface transportation system safer and more effective through the
