Subaru Sales Soar to New Heights; Best Sales Month Since 1989

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., Sept. 2 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its August sales figures.  This month's figures represent
another milestone in Subaru sales history.  With the ongoing success of Subaru
sales, August brought in a total of 12,870 units -- up 24 percent over the
same period in 1996, making August the best sales month in eight years.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 7,945 units.  Within the Legacy line,
the Subaru Outback accounted for 4,838 of those units.  The Impreza line, with
1,879 total units sold, steadily increased 2 percent over the same period in
1996.  The Impreza wagon led the model line with 1,431 units -- an increase of
44 percent over the same month in 1996.
    Forester sales continue to grow with 3,007 units sold for August -- up
87 percent over last month's sales.  This marks the best sales month so far
for the newest Subaru hybrid.  Forester sales started in July 1997.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd. of Japan.  Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 630 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy
models sold in the U.S., including the Outback, are produced at the company's
American manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc., near Lafayette,
Ind.
