July Gas Prices Drop at Mid-Summer Mark, Says AAASAN FRANCISCO, July 22 -- Retail gas prices in northern California dropped slightly, the American Automobile Association (AAA) reported Tuesday. Self-serve unleaded averages $1.34 a gallon in northern California, down six cents from AAA's June 23 Fuel Gauge Survey. "Gasoline production continues at high levels in the Western region, which is contributing to the summer down-turn of prices," said AAA's northern California spokesman Ron Kennedy. "In addition, California's phase II reformulated gasoline production is very abundant," Kennedy continued. The average for self-serve unleaded has dropped three to seven cents in northern California. In Monterey, the average has dropped seven cents to $1.37. San Jose and San Francisco's averages fell five cents to $1.36 and $1.41. Sacramento and Santa Rosa's averages also dipped five cents to $1.27 and $1.31, a gallon. San Rafael's average tumbled four cents to $1.39. Hayward's average also fell four cents to $1.38. The Lake Tahoe average is down three cents to $1.35, Oakland's average has dipped two cents to $1.35, The Santa Cruz average has remained at $1.41. San Mateo's average, however, is up one cent to $1.40. (See accompanying chart for detailed price changes.) The regional averages for self-serve unleaded in northern California are 15 to 20 cents lower this July, compared to last year at this time. The national average for self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.23, down four cents from a year ago. In Nevada, the average for self-serve unleaded rose one cent to $1.32. The Las Vegas average fell six cents to $1.25. Reno's average dropped five cents to $1.39. Utah's average for self-serve regular unleaded fell two cents to $1.24 a gallon. In Salt Lake City, the average also dipped two cents to $1.24. Provo's average, however, climbed one cent to $1.24.
