Another Saab World First: Ventilated Passenger Car Seats

NORCROSS, Ga., April 4 -- True to its tradition of
intelligent engineering, Saab has introduced the world's first ventilated
passenger car front seats. Debuted today at the Stockholm Motor Show, the
seats are designed to complement Saab's state-of-the-art heating and cooling
system by offering customers the additional benefit of whole-body airflow. In
the U.S., this world-first feature will be available in the all-new Saab
9-5 premium sedan when it debuts in the spring of 1998.
Saab's ventilated seats integrate two fans of very thin diameter, one
placed in the Saab seat backrest and one within the seat cushion. The fans
operate in three speed modes, drawing warm air normally trapped between the
occupant and the seat upholstery through the perforated seat leather. The
humid air is then funneled through a network of small channels in the seat
padding, through exit ports underneath the seat, where it is cooled by the
regular air-conditioning system.
To achieve this new level of Saab passenger comfort, Saab engineers
applied their own brand of innovative thinking to a technology that has until
now only been used in the luxury truck, bus and construction equipment
industry. In addition to enhancing occupant comfort, the Saab ventilated seat
concept also helps keep the driver alert and focused on the pleasure of
driving.
