Pennzoil Racing Hires Johnny Rutherford as Racing Advisor

    HOUSTON, Feb. 12 -- In 1980, "Driver of the Year" Johnny
Rutherford won the pole position at the Indy 500 in the famous Pennzoil
Chaparral and led 119 laps en route to victory.  Now Pennzoil and the three-
time Indy 500 winner have teamed up again.
    Clyde W. Beahm, Pennzoil Products Company group vice president for
products marketing, announced today that Rutherford will serve as racing
advisor for all of Pennzoil's racing programs, including IRL, NASCAR, NHRA and
the World of Outlaws sprint cars.  "Johnny's racing background and his
knowledge of the sport make him an ideal advisor for our recently expanded
racing program," said Beahm.  "Pennzoil and Johnny were a great team, and
we're delighted to have him in our camp again."
    Rutherford said he looks forward to representing Pennzoil at the track.
"I'm proud of being Pennzoil's first Indy winner," he noted, and "I'm looking
forward to my involvement with Pennzoil's racing team."
    Rutherford was one of the most successful Indianapolis racers of all time.
In addition to being a three-time winner at the Indy 500 (1974, 1976 and
1980), he has also won the 500 mile Indy car races at Pocono (1974) and
Michigan (1986).  At the time of his retirement in 1994, Rutherford had
amassed 27 Indy car victories and 23 Indy car pole positions.  Along the way
he won the Indy car National Championship in 1980 and finished in the top four
for eight consecutive years.  He was inducted into the international
Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1995, the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1995
and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 1987.
    In addition to his successes in Indy cars, Rutherford was the 1965 USAC
national sprint car champion.  He was also the fastest qualifier for the 1963
Daytona 500.
