Chrysler International Sales Equal Year Ago Marks
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 5 -- Chrysler International
announced January 1997 sales of 17,366 vehicles, nearly the same as last
year's January posting of 17,641 units. Excluding complete knock down units,
retail sales of Chrysler and Jeep(R) vehicles around the world were up six
percent as compared to the same time period in 1996.
"We are positioning ourselves to be competitive in international markets
with our lineup of right-hand drive vehicles, new product introductions and
the opening of new manufacturing facilities like the Csrdoba plant in
Argentina," said Francois J. Castaing, Executive Vice President, International
and General Manager -- Powertrain Operations.
"Jeep products and minivans, in both configurations, continue to be top
sellers for us in overseas markets. And, we are seeing the popularity of our
passenger cars grow with Neon, now available in right and left hand drive, up
14 percent," added Castaing.
Jeep products lead the way in January, posting top percentage increases
with Jeep Grand Cherokee up 44 percent and Wrangler up 28 percent. Chrysler
minivans sold outside North America totaled 4,377 units up 21 percent.
Chrysler Europe started the year with a strong performance maintaining its
position as the leader in regional volume sales at 7,995, up nine percent.
Australia, Korea and Thailand posted top percentage increases for the
Asia/Pacific region, although overall the region was down 22 percent. Latin
America recorded the overall highest-percentage
increase, up 49 percent due to strong showings by Brazil and Argentina.
Chrysler International has experienced double-digit growth since 1991.
