Rockwell Heavy Announces Quality Certification for its Brakes

5 February 1997

Rockwell Heavy Vehicle Systems' Brake Business achieves QS-9000 Certification

TROY, Mich., Feb. 5 -- The Brake Systems business of Rockwell
Heavy Vehicle Systems (HVS) has achieved QS-9000 certification, which
recognizes the business' commitment to customer satisfaction and quality
requirements.
Under QS-9000, Rockwell's quality systems must meet the expectations of
those OEMs who have adopted the Quality Systems Requirements. The basis for
QS-9000 is the ISO 9000 Quality System Standards, with ISO 9001 being an
integral component. Rockwell HVS' Brake Systems business, including the
manufacturing facility in Tilbury, Ont., received ISO 9001 certification in
1996.
Prakash R. Mulchandani, president of Rockwell Worldwide Truck and Trailer
Systems, said, "Once our manufacturing facility and engineering group had both
received ISO certification, QS-9000 certification was imminent. Quality
practices are always at the forefront of our activities, but QS-9000
certification gives us an even greater focus on customer satisfaction."
In addition to retaining ISO 9000 certification, there are other system
requirements for QS-9000 compliance. The QS-9000 quality manual has "sector-
specific" and "customer-specific" requirements. The sector-specific
requirements are additional guidelines that focus on quality needs in the
areas of production part approval, continuous improvement and manufacturing
capabilities. The customer-specific requirements refer to the individual
requests the OEMs have stipulated for their suppliers.
"Obtaining QS-9000 certification has helped us center our attention on the
growing needs of our customers while, at the same time, provide them with the
best possible support. Hard work on the part of many people in our Brake
business has enabled us to achieve this important distinction," Mulchandani
added.
The Brake Systems business is the first of the HVS businesses to obtain
QS-9000 certification. Other Rockwell facilities and businesses that have
been awarded ISO certification include:

    * Tilbury, Ont. brake manufacturing facility
    * Kenton, Ohio trailer axle manufacturing facility
    * Asheville, N.C. axle manufacturing facility
    * Morristown, Tenn. axle gear manufacturing facility
    * Florence, Ky. and Brampton, Ont. Aftermarket Parts & Services facilities
