Carlson was born September 23, 1970. By the age of 12, this Indianapolis native was racing BMX bikes. He made his USAC midget debut in 1989, at the Fort Wayne, Indiana Coliseum. That same year, Tyce made his All-American Midget Series debut at Volusia County (Florida) Speedway, earning Co-Rookie of the Year honors at the close of the season. In 1990, he won the Most Improved Driver and Outstanding Sportsman honors in the series.
He became a regular in the USAC Series from 1990 to 1995. While he competed in the USAC Midget Series, he won their Most Improved Driver award in 1991, and finished a career-best seventh in point standings in 1992 and 1993. >From 1992 through 1995, he also competed in USAC's Sprint and Silver Crown Series events; Carlson's best finish (5th) in the USAC Sprint Series came June 1995, at Richmond Virginia; his best finish (14th) in USAC's Silver Crown Series came October 1992, at Eldora Speedway and June 1995, at Richmond, Virginia.
In the 1996/1997 IRL season, Carlson was the fastest qualifying and highest finishing rookie at the season opener at Louden, New Hampshire.
