Schmidt was born August 15, 1967, in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a youth, he competed in motocross events from 1973 - 1977. A fter his father's serious off-road accident, he stayed away from motorsports until 1992. When he started racing again, he competed in the SCCA Spec Racer Series. He dominated the series, earning eight wins, nine poles, a rookie of the year award. He became the southern Pacific champion and was fourth in SCCA runoffs that year. The next season, in 1993, he moved to the SCCA Formula Continental Series; he earned four wins and five poles. He was also Southern Pacific's Driver of the year and the winner of the national title at the SCCA runoffs. Next, came the Hooters Formula Pro Series, where he finished third in points. In 1996, he won two events and posted nine-top-10 finishes in the U.S. Formula 2000 Series.
