This Cerritos, California native started competing in motocross events at nine years old. Born January 2, 1969, he won his first off-road race at the Nevada 500; two weeks later, he won the Mickey Thompson stadium race. In 1986, he teamed with his father in the SCORE/HYDRA Series, winning the Rookie of the Year title in 1987. His outstanding performance in the series, led to him being voted Off-Road Driver of the Year in 1989 and 1990. The next year, he took the championship title in the SCORE/HDRA Series, with three wins.

Gordon made his debut in the IMSA GTO Series in 1990, winning the 24 Hours of Daytona. He went on to score wins at Meadowlands, Lime Rock and Del Mar, tying Pete Halsmer for a second place finish in the series. In 1991, he finished the series in second place again, behind Pete Halsmer.

Gordon made his PPG Cup debut in the Detroit Grand Prix, in 1992. He competed in seven races that year with a best finish of eighth in Toronto and Cleveland. A formidable opponent in the series, he finished in the top ten in point standings for the next three years (1993-10th, 1994-5th, 1995-5th). His first Indy "500" race came in 1993. Though Gearbox failure sidelined him that day, he made up for it with fifth place finishes at the Indy races in 1994 and 1995. His first IRL event came during the 1996/1997 season at Las Vegas. He finished 14th that day, sidelined by wheel bearing failure.
