Jeff Ward was born June 22, 1961, in Glasgow Scotland. He started motocross racing when he was five years old and did not stop until he announced his retirement from motorcross in 1992. While he competed, he posted 20 career Supercross wins, 54 career Motocross wins, and he served on the Winning U.S. team in Motocross Des Nations seven times. He won his first AMA National title in 125cc Motocross in 1984. He went on to become a two-time AMA National 250cc Motocross champion (1985 and 1988), a two-time AMA National 250cc Supercross champion (1985 and 1987), and a two-time AMA National 500cc Motocross champion (1989 and 1990). He was the first rider in history to win every major AMA national motorcross title.
After his retirement from motocross, he competed in Indy Lights events-with a best finish of 3rd, at Nazareth (1994) and Michigan (1996). In 1995, he made an unsuccessful qualifying attempt in his first Indy appearance. Ward debuted in the IRL as a substitute for the injured Davy Jones on the Galles team, at Orlando. He was sidelined by a gearbox problem after 63 laps and finished 16th.
