Jack Miller was born June 14, 1961, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He gained his initial experience in motorsports attending SCCA driving schools from 1987 to 1989. He later taught as an instructor at SCCA racing schools. He started racing in the SCCA Ford Series in 1988. In 1990, he split his time between SCCA's regional and national Formula Atlantic Series, earning a win, a second and a third in the Super Vee class. He made his debut in the Firestone Indy Lights Series in 1992, as a driver. The next year, he was a car and team owner, winning six of twelve events. In 1996, he earned three top-10 finishes in the series. Miller joined the IRL in 1996, finishing 15th in his first race of the season.
