Salazar was born November 18, 1955, in Santiago, Chile. At 19, he became the Chilean champion in saloon cars. He graduated to Formula 4 cars, becoming Argentina's Formula 4 champion in 1975. Salazar's racing resume includes British Formula 3 Series, Aurora British Formula One Series, Formula One Series, Formula 3000 Series, IMSA World Sportscar and LeMans events. In 1978, he finished second in points in the Aurora British Formula One Series. In 1994, he won consecutive races at Lime Rock, Watkins Glen and Indianapolis Raceway Park. He posted seconds at Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Portland and Phoenix as well, finishing the IMSA World Sportscar championship in sixth place. Salazar's first Indy experience came in 1995. Though he started back in 24th position, he worked his way through the pack to a fourth place finish. He competed in 15 other PPG Cup events too, with a best finish of 10th, at Australia and Cleveland. The next year, he finished the "500" in sixth place.
